Despite the numerous modern day applications of the chronograph, the device was originally developed with only one thing in mind - to please a king. In 1821, King Louis XVIII tasked Nicolas Rieussec to invent a device that could determine how long a horse race would last. The invention was the predecessor to the automatic chronograph developed by Breitling in 1969 in partnership with other firms.
